Speaking on talkSPORT, former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham has revealed why the club haven’t seen the best out of Romelu Lukaku since his move from Everton.
What did he say?
Reports in recent weeks have suggested that the Belgium international could be on his way out of Old Trafford this summer, amid speculation linking him with the likes of Juventus and Inter.
Following an underwhelming campaign last season in which he scored just 15 times in 45 games, Sheringham has given his thoughts on why the striker has struggled to fire on all cylinders at Old Trafford.

He said: “When you play for Everton, you get a lot of space in behind defenders where you can run into. When you play for Manchester United, a lot of teams come to Old Trafford, sit in and say, ‘Come and beat us’. So all of his attributes – his size, strength and speed – he can’t use them for Manchester United.
“You have to be a certain type of player to get the ball into feet and play, making little dinky runs rather than big powerful runs. I don’t think the Manchester United fans have seen the best of him.”
A bad fit
Perhaps more so than at any other point in his United career to date, Lukaku is arguably the furthest away he has ever been from making it into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team – regardless of the transfer speculation surrounding him. The United manager is seemingly intent on playing on the front foot and pressing teams high up the pitch and dominating teams from the first whistle.
Lukaku’s strong suit isn’t that, and he pales in comparison to strike partner Marcus Rashford when it comes to sheer work rate and off-the-ball movement. The Red Devils are looking like they’re making sweeping changes to the way the play and Lukaku doesn’t quite match the requirements necessary.
And if there were ever an expert in the movement and positioning a striker needs to find space for the top sides, Sheringham is it.
