As football fans we all know what a fantastic talent Fernando Torres is and despite the recent media witch hunt against him – that talent remains. However, Torres is not in the best of form and his performances have not been great – but is the Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti doing all he can to get the best out of Torres?
Torres has not yet scored in a Chelsea shirt and has now made 9 Premier League appearances without finding the net. This was not the return that Chelsea were expecting for the £50m they paid Liverpool for the Spainard’s services. However, there is certainly an argument that Carlo Ancelotti has a part to play in all of this.
The game on Saturday was another classic example of Ancelotti not being fair to Torres. The match against West Brom would have been a game Chelsea were hot favourites to win and there would have been an argument to start Torres. But I do understand with him out of form and against a team on a good run why he didn’t start. However, I cannot understand why Torres did not come on until the 81st minute. By doing this Ancelotti has effectively ensured Torres has added another game to his tally without scoring. Even a striker in form would do well to score in nine minutes on the field.

It’s a real shame because I think that Chelsea missed a real trick here with what they could have done for Torres. It struck me that Chelsea had the game effectively won at half-time with the Premier League holders leading 3-1. Surely that was an ideal opportunity to bring Torres on at the start of the second half and give him the best opportunity to end his period without scoring.
The reality is most strikers are confidence players – scoring goals is hugely important for them to perform well. Therefore, once Torres does get that goal he could well go on a bit of a run and we could start to see the old Fernando Torres we all know and love. Carlo Ancelotti though doesn’t seem to have much idea on what to do with Torres. Sometimes he starts and then gets hauled off at half time and on Saturday was given virtually no time to make an impact. Torres should be told what his role is and how he is going be used. But above all he needs time on the pitch.
