As one of the most competitive leagues in the world, there is nothing better when it goes down to the wire to find a team to be crowned Premier League champions.
Unfortunately, football fans will not get that privilege this year as Chelsea have already wrapped the title up. And how would we cope if Arsenal did take the title? Manchester City do not deserve to win it, either. Aside from the top spot, is there even a battle for the top four this season?
The gap between fourth and fifth seems too great to be closed at this late stage in the league. Liverpool will probably still miss out on Champions League football, despite them closing the gap between themselves and fourth placed Man United to just four points last weekend.
But despite that gap, it’s still fair to say the top four is all but done. The only thing is, will those four stay that way? Chelsea have the title in their pocket, and it was theirs all along. But what about second to fourth? Is that how it will sit on the final day of the season?
With Arsenal’s game in hand, they could just take second place. Arenal were impressive in their 3-1 victory at Hull last night. If Arsenal can keep their cool and land second place, it will be the first time they have managed to do so in ten years.
Since 2005/2006 season, Arsenal have finished either third or fourth place. But this is not a reflection of a team who have improved massively, but it shows how the other teams have slacked. Look at Manchester City. They have shown no real passion or determination to retain their title, so they have lost it.
City and Arsenal are currently level on points, but Manuel Pellegrini’s men have the better goal difference. Though, as mentioned, Arsenal do still have a game in hand to leapfrog City into second. Manchester United, although written off at the beginning of the season, are now just two points behind them both in fourth.
The top four spots may already be filled, but down at the bottom of the table, it’s still all to play for. Who gets relegated could go down to the wire. Leicester City have clawed their way out of the relegation zone, and if they can get back on track after their defeat to Chelsea they can stay out. As it stands, Burnley, Queen’s Park Rangers and Sunderland are going down.
